Magdalena Carmen Frieda Kahlo y Calderón, known as Frida Kahlo, was born on the outskirts of Mexico City in 1907. As a child Kahlo planned to study medicine, however in 1925, at the age of eighteen, she was involved in a bus accident that nearly killed her and from which she never fully recovered.

Frida Kahlo once said, "I paint myself because I am often alone and I am the subject I know best". Her mother had a special easel made for her so she could paint in bed, and her father lent her his box of oil paints and some brushes.
